Lookout Drive Adobe

La Jolla, CA

Originally constructed in the 1920s, this historic adobe dwelling was thoughtfully transformed into a 4,500-square-foot custom residence—carefully balancing preservation with expansion. The original adobe walls were retained and restored, maintaining the home’s historic character, texture, and material authenticity.

New architectural interventions were designed to complement the integrity of the existing structure, allowing the home to evolve in scale and function while honoring its origins. The result is a cohesive composition where past and present are seamlessly integrated—celebrating the craftsmanship of the original adobe construction while supporting contemporary living.

A new two-story primary suite and kitchen wing extend the home’s functionality, complemented by a detached garage with a lofted gym that captures views toward the Pacific Ocean. An elegant curved stair links the garage to the elevated fitness space, seamlessly integrating new architectural interventions with the heritage fabric of the original adobe home.

Tucked discreetly behind the kitchen and beneath the main stair leading to the primary suite, this compact powder room transforms an underutilized space into a moment of surprise. The client selected vibrant stone materials to introduce a contemporary counterpoint to the home’s historic bones, creating a layered dialogue between old and new within a richly detailed, intimate setting.

A new bay window in the primary bathroom was carefully designed to blend seamlessly with the home’s existing architecture. Its addition is complemented by the refurbishment of the original entry door and the “La Casa de Tierra” inscription above, reinforcing the residence’s historic identity while introducing a subtle layer of refinement.

Overall, this project presented the challenge of embracing the historic adobe fabric, working thoughtfully within its constraints, and expanding the home to support contemporary family living while preserving its original character.
